Louisa Lavelle
Artist and Genealogist

I have enjoyed painting since my high school days, and since I became a grandmother have expanded my interest in family history.

Art

I have studied with many local artists in New Jersey and Maryland and in addition, have attended workshops in California, Wyoming and Georgia. Formerly an active member of the Hackensack Art Club (N.J.), Bykota, and the Charcoal Club of Baltimore, several years ago I joined the Pine Shores Art Association in Manahawkin, New Jersey close to my home near the ocean in New Jersey.

As an active member of these organizations I have participated in numerous art shows, including a one woman show at the Cook Library of Towson University, Baltimore, and as "Artist of the Month" at Pine Shores Art Association. In addition, I have won several awards and my work hangs in private collections. With my varied interests and continually striving to learn more, I have explored oils, drawing, watercolor, acrylics and pastels. The subject matter of my works includes portraits, still life, florals and landscapes, which are chiefly based on sketches done while traveling in the United States and abroad. Examples of paintings can be seen here.

Genealogy

As the eldest child of parents who emigrated from Bavaria, Germany in 1922, German was my first language. Wishing to preserve their family history for my children, with the help of relatives in Germany I was able to trace nearly all my family lines to the early 1700's, and a few even earlier. My husband's family, with the exception of one line, were Potato Famine immigrants who settled in Manhattan from Ireland and remained there until very recent generations. Listed here are names that have been researched.
